چکیده

Meaning is a central problem in intelligent systems design. Most approaches in literature still adopt a strict symbolic definition of meaning, which usually results in deficiencies such as the symbol grounding problem. The objective of this research is to come up with a computational model of the emergence of meaning in autonomous agents based on the pragmatic notion of sign as defined by Charles Sanders Peirce. Peirce’s theory of sign provides a more comprehensive theoretical framework to deal with the problem of meaning, when compared with purely symbolic (dyadic) approaches as those in classical artificial intelligence. His notion of sign (an entity that signifies) does not suffer from the problem of the lack of reference (symbol grounding problem) because it is firmly based on a triadic relation between Sign, Object and Interpretant. In this paper, we present some considerations regarding an artificial implementation of a process of semiosis, equipped with the ability to process icons, indexes and symbols. We investigate the main theoretical constraints required for a system to be able to process signs of each of these types. The whole process of artificial semiosis is described as an emergent process of interaction among semiotic agents.

T Some Considerations Regarding Mathematical Semiosis

The discussion on the possibility of machines to achieve semiosis (meaning process) is a very controversial debate within Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science. In this work, we define meaning process in an entirely mathematical framework. We call the “transposition” of the Peircean theory to an abstract mathematical model as “Mathematical Semiosis”. By doing this, we aim at growing a m...

Functional Information: Towards Synthesis of Biosemiotics and Cybernetics

Biosemiotics and cybernetics are closely related, yet they are separated by the boundary between life and non-life: biosemiotics is focused on living organisms, whereas cybernetics is applied mostly to non-living artificial devices. However, both classes of systems are agents that perform functions necessary for reaching their goals. I propose to shift the focus of biosemiotics from living orga...

Semiotic modeling of biological processes: Multi-level model of emergent semiosis

General abstract: Here we introduce biosemiotics as a field of research that develops models of life processes focusing on their informational aspects. Peirce’s general concept of semiosis can be used to analyze such processes, and provide a powerful basis for understanding the emergence of meaning in living systems, by contributing to the construction of a theory of biological information. Pei...

Semiosis as an Emergent Process

In this paper, we intend to discuss if and in what sense semiosis (meaning process, cf. C.S. Peirce) can be regarded as an “emergent” process in semiotic systems. It is not our problem here to answer when or how semiosis emerged in nature. As a prerequisite for the very formulation of these problems, we are rather interested in discussing the conditions which should be fulfilled for semiosis to...
